SJU Football Player Receives National Academic HonorDecember 1, 2004 COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. - Saint John's University junior linebacker Matt Hawn, a pre-dentistry major from Eau Claire, Wis. was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America College Division Football second team for the 2004 season, which was released on Wednesday, Dec. 1. Hawn is the 13th SJU football player to receive Academic All-America honors in the last 11 years and is one of four Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football players named to the 2004 Academic All-America team. Hawn had 69 total tackles, 27 solo tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, two pass break-ups, two fumble recoveries and one sack this season. Hawn was third on the team in total tackles and key to SJU's defense being ranked No. 4 nationally in total defense, No. 6 in scoring defense and No. 9 in passing efficiency defense this season. The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America award program recognizes academic and athletic excellence. To be eligible for nomination, a player must have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) and be at least a sophomore. Players are nominated for the award by their school's sports information director and selected by the voting members of the College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA). The College Division football team is selected from a field of student-athletes representing all NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA institutions in the United States and Canada. SJU ended the 2004 season with a 7-3 overall record and a second-place finish in the MIAC standings. |
